BOE approves tentative budget

      The Jenkins County Board of Education (BOE) approved a tentative 2008-2009 budget of $12,040,812 during a called meeting held Monday, July 7. This represents an increase of $643,185 over the previous year's budget of $11,397,627.

Former Church of God preacher dies in accident

      A retired judge died on Burke County roadways last week after falling asleep at the wheel. According to state troopers, the Rev. Kelmer Durden, 79, of Swainsboro was traveling on Highway 305 near Vidette Thursday afternoon when he fell asleep and crashed his 1994 Lincoln Town Car into a culvert.
