It’s that time of the year again when property owners dig into their pockets to pay their tax bills. Property taxes are due in the office of the Jenkins County Tax Commissioner at the Jenkins County Courthouse on Friday, Feb. 10.

Barrow announces grant award to NJCVFD

Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) announced recently that the North Jenkins County Volunteer Fire Department ( NJCVFD) will receive a $204,250 Fiscal Year 2011 Assistance to Firefighters Grant ( AFG). The grant award is being made by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Manage- ment Agency.

The Jenkins County High School boys’ basketball team (11-8 overall, 4-4 sub region) got back to their winning ways by defeating Johnson County 77-35 and Wheeler County 94- 58.

“Our lack of focus on defense has cost us recently. We’ve been locked-in the last couple of games and the proof is in the results,” said head coach Mark Whitt.

Army Reserve Pvt. Levontae T. Hall has graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, Mo. The course of instruction included basic military training and advanced individual training (AIT).

The Jenkins County Memorial Library is currently closed for repairs. We will be reopening Wednesday, Feb. 8, at our usual time, all fixed up and ready to go! While the library is closed, Jenkins County residents are invited to come visit the Screven County Library at the corner of Community Drive and W. T. Sharpe Road in Sylvania for all their library needs.

I recently had to go get new glasses. It is a chore I put off for as long as I can, because I always have trouble adjusting to the new ones. This time it is particularly difficult as I opted for the no-line bi-focals because, as the technician put it, “Lined bi-focal glasses are almost obsolete” and it would “help with computer work.”
