The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

I heard a news report one day last week about two young girls who often made cookies for neighbors and left them anonymously on the neighbors’ front porches.

Unfortunately, one neighbor saw their shadows on the porch as they delivered the goodies at night and became frightened. The neighbor suffered a panic attack and later sued the girls for medical expenses incurred as a result of the incident and won the case.

Undaunted, the girls simply said they would just be more particular about when and how they delivered their cookies in the future. The news report showed them in a kitchen whipping up another batch of cookies.

I was amazed that these two young girls had not become discouraged or that their parents had not forbidden them from continuing the cooking baking. Most of us, I’m afraid, would have just put our cookie pans in the cabinet and let them collect dust after such an incident.

But, then I thought about all of the neighbors who had gratefully received their cookies and had appreciated their thoughtfulness, and I was glad that the girls and their parents had not let that one incident destroy the legacy of kindness they were building in their neighborhood.

I have to admit that I sometimes just want to run and hide under a rock when something I do with the best of intentions goes awry. These girls, even though I don’t know them, taught me a very valuable lesson.
