Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
Jenkins County’s Relay For Life was held May 20. Even with the rain, we walked and had a fun night. I just wanted to take this opportunity to personally thank those who worked so hard to raise money for this worthy event and make it a success.
If we stop and look around, cancer has affected almost every family in our community in one way or another, either through a family member or a close friend. I have lost both a mother and a best friend to this dreaded disease.
We were late getting started this year with few in numbers, and many obstacles were thrown our way, but that just made us more determined to succeed.
A special thank you to our corporate sponsors: Jenkins County Farm Bureau, Planters EMC, First National Bank and Trust Company and Cash Now. You got us off to a good start!!
Where were our other sponsors? You certainly were missed this year!
Also, thank you to those who took the time to attend the planning meetings and spent much personal time and effort to make this relay a success (but especially to all those who donated their money).
In order to work toward the cure of this deadly disease, we must come together to raise money for cancer research. This includes all the citizens of Jenkins County who will give their time and talents to make this once a year event a success. Many familiar faces were absent this year, and we all missed you. Now is the time to begin thinking about next year’s walk and how you would like to help. A planning meeting will be scheduled later in the summer.
At this point, we have raised $13,266.48, but it is certainly not too late to contribute. Thanks again to everyone who made this relay a success by donating your time, efforts and especially your money.

Dear Editor:
I would like to take this time and congratulate Jenkins County’s Emergency Medical Technician of the Year, Ms. Katherine Kelly. I must say that I was not shocked when I read in The Millen News that she was the recipient of the award for 2005. All I could say was, "Kat is still at it!" I have known Kat for 15 years and I know her better than most people. To the citizens of Jenkins County, I must say that you are a lucky group of people to have someone so dedicated right in your midst. And to Kat, God is blessing! For all you are trying to do in life, the adversary may put up a fight, believe me I know, but if God is for you, who can be against you! I am a living witness to that.
Thank you and all the citizens of Jenkins County for my wonderful years there. Millen will always be my home.
May the blessings of the Lord continue to shower upon Jenkins County!
Jimmy Williams Sr.
