STC welding students create art with scraps

(Photo contributed) Swainsboro Technical College (STC) welding students recently displayed their artistic abilities. Dual enrolled welding students from Jenkins County High School made sculptures from scrap weld metal they used during their school year, as a final project. "This group of young people
has artistic abilities," commented Michael Crumpler, welding instructor for STC. "I knew they would also enjoy having an opportunity to create something of their very own. Their sculptures range from a fly, an alligator, a cat, a turtle, a truck, a hummingbird, a frog and the Eiffel tower. This project was a way for them
to be creative and express themselves artistically; plus, we could use up all of the scrap metal that was accumulated during the year. I will miss this group of students and wish them well in their career paths, and maybe some will choose welding."
The Dual Enrollment Program allows high school students to receive credit from their high school and post secondary credit hours from STC for the same course. Any student enrolled in a Georgia high school who has been classified as a junior or senior, or who is at least 16 years of age and meets the dual and regular admission requirements of STC, is eligible to participate in the Dual Enrollment Program.
Two of the students, Zachry Rhodes and Nick Martucci, plan to continue their education at STC next school year by enrolling in the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding program to learn a new welding process, commonly referred to as TIG. Another student, Milton Minchener, a senior at Jenkins County High School, received a certification in Gas Metal Arc Welding and already has job offers waiting upon completing graduation.
Individual pictures of the different sculptures created by the students are available on the Swainsboro Technical College web site ( http:// pr.swainsborotech.edu/articles/ YEAR%202006/06-16-06News%20template.htm .)
