Morrison Grove Baptist Church

The Morrison Grove Baptist Church, founded in 1872, will celebrate their 134th anniversary 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6.

The Revs. N. Walker, Thomas Morton, Bob Kelsey and M. Wallace, along with Deacon Daniel Johnson from the Carswell Grove Baptist Church, saw fit to organize a church under a brush arbor on the Marsh Perkins place with sand for a floor and poles for seats.

When it became necessary to move the church from the fields to a better location, Henry Morrison, Daniel Johnson and Moses Simmons, deacons, went to James Daniel to buy a piece of land near the road. Daniel was so kind that he gave them the two acres of land on which the church sits today, for divine worship. Simmons took a broadax and cleared out all the timber, and then he called his brothers and friends together to build the church.

The church was named after Deacon Henry Morrison, who was the first member of the church.

As part of the anniversary service, those for whom the front entrance was constructed in honor of, or in memory of, will be recognized. This project included steps, handicap ramp, lighted walkways and a lighted, stained glass steeple.

The Rev. P.M. Broomfield will bring the anniversary message. He will be accompanied by the congregation of Zion Baptist Church. Dinner will be served following the service. The public is invited.
