4-H News

By Anna Burgess CEA 4-H & Youth

School will be here before you know it, which means 4-H Club meetings will be starting back soon. It seems like the summers just keep getting shorter and shorter. I hope everyone has had a great summer and I am looking forward to meeting you all!

Mini Booths

Every year, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club sponsors the educational exhibits at the Statesboro fair. These exhibits (mini-booths) are a three sided poster display on any topic the 4-Her is interested in. They are a great way for 4-Hers to learn about a topic that interests them while having fun making their display! The middle poster is typically the title poster and the two side posters contain the supporting material. The posters are set up much like a science fair project. In the middle of the posters, on the booth floor, 4-Hers are able to place visuals to make their projects more appealing and eye catching.

Every 5th -12th grader is encouraged to participate. For our 5th graders, this is the first 4-H activity they can participate in.

Jenkins County always has a wonderful amount of participation in the fair, and I hope to see the same this year. The mini booths are judged and prize money is awarded. 4-Hers who participate are able to attend our annual trip to the fair on student night. The fair is scheduled for October 9-14. It seems like it is a long ways off but it will be here soon. Please come by and begin work on your project as soon as possible.

Flocking for Our Youth

The flocking has begun! This is a wonderful way to help the youth in Jenkins County. The 4-H Club offers wonderful educational events throughout the year for every child in Millen from the 5th to 12th grade. With as many as 500 enrolled, it can be difficult securing the funds for the children to be able to participate in these events and be proud of their work. Hundreds of dollars are spent every year just on supplies for the fall events. Your donations and participation in this event is greatly appreciated by the 4-Hers and the 4-H staff. Please remember to call the office as soon as you notice the birds at your home or business so that we can move them to the home or business of your choice!
