Firefighters training for state certification
The South Jenkins Volunteer Fire Department (SJVFD) is in its seventh month of providing fire protection south of the Ogeechee River and east of Highway 23. Presently 17 firefighters are certified by the state, and 12 candidates are in training for their state certification. The 60 hours of classroom instruction are being held at the fire station located on Elam Road in the Four Points Community. Personnel from the Millen- Jenkins County Fire Department and North Jenkins County Volunteer Fire Department are also participating in this course. David Barron is leading the effort to have the SJVFD expand into the area west of Highway 23. The SJVFD says it has most of the equipment necessary to establish a fire station and will provide the training for new firefighters. David says if you live west of Highway 23 and are interested in a fire station being established in your area, contact him, and he will make the formal request to the SJVFD. You may also contact any member of the fire department. Pictured are firefighters currently in the Basic Firefighters Training Course. They are, from left: Kevin Stewart, Dobie Gay, Drew Hickman, Nicholas Johnson, Charlie Lanier (NJCVFD), Chad Fields, Joe Newton, Wade Parker (MJCFD), Ernest Lanier, Jeremy Lindsey and John Williams.
