SCV, UDC prepare for Education Day
Members of the Buckhead-Fort Lawson Brigade, Camp 2102 of the Sons of Confederate Veterans met Saturday, Nov. 25, to ready the Buckhead Church building and grounds for the annual Education Day that took place Friday, Dec. 1. Pictured, above, are Darryl Drake, Brandon Young, Byron Newton, Tommy Stephens, James Saxon, Joe Wilson, Sonny Allen, Roger Saxon, Ray Garvin and cadet Conley Drake. Not pictured is Steve Burke. The sign is placed “In Their Honor … For Their Honor” and recognizes the groups that help maintain the historic site – Jenkins County Historical Society; Brigadier General John C. Carter, Camp 207 in Waynesboro; Margaret Jones Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy in Waynesboro; the 32nd Georgia Artillery and Burke Sharpshooters re-enactor units; and Camp 2102 in Millen. Left, a woman’s work is never done – UDC members Donna Drake and Dorothy “Dot” Cauley are caught in the act of readying the church for an estimated 400 school children. Below, camp 2102 commander Darryl Drake presents the 1956 Georgia State Flag and Resolution from international headquarters Sons of Confederate Veterans honoring the late member Raymond Elias Zeigler II to his family at the Nov. 25 meeting. Pictured facing are compatriot Zeigler’s parents, Peggy and Ray Sr. of Sylvania; daughter, Stephanie Beasley; and grandson, Dallas Beasley of Statesboro. Also attending but not pictured were nephew, Ed Sheley and family friends Bill and Marnetta “Marty” Pace of Sylvania. Ray was a charter member of Camp 2102.
