Education Day recently held at Buckhead

Metter Elementary students are shown with an authentic collection of Civil War-era surgical instruments/doctor’s paraphernalia.
The annual Education Day for area students was recently held at historic Buckhead Church.

This year, only one school, Metter Elementary, attended bringing three buses and 130 students to learn about the War Between the States.

Re-enactors came from as far as Bryan, Richmond and Bibb counties to display “tools of the trade” and tactics to an appreciative and very well-behaved group of young people.

The event is sponsored yearly through cooperation of Jenkins County Historical Society, UDC, SCV and various re-enactor groups in the area.
Mrs. Mary Hargrove, 84, of Waynesboro, representing the United Daughters of the Confederacy Margaret Jones Chapter, led the group in a rousing singing of “Dixie” and read the Joel Chandler Harris classic, “The Tar Baby Story.”
Under the trees, students await a demonstration of battle tactics and explanation of uniforms and accouterments.
