JCHS Eagles bring thrill back to basketball

Jenkins County traveled to Pembroke to take on the Bryan County Redskins Friday, Dec. 15, and was victorious.

Bryan County rallied late in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles walked away with the 75-69 win.

JCHS took a 4-point lead into the locker room at halftime. Bryan County started the third quarter with Alkeem Collins hitting two quick baskets. Kennith Scott answered Collins’ baskets with two baskets of his own to keep the Eagles in front.

Leading scorers for the game were Kennith Scott, 36 points, 3 assists, 4 blocks, and 3 steals; Chris Griffin, 10 points, 12 rebounds, 1 block; and Keonte Gross, 11 points, 2 assists, 2 blocks, 6 rebounds.

For Bryan County, Alkeem Collins had 14 points; Willie DeLoach, 15 points; and Keith Kelley, 11 points.

The Eagles racked up their second win of the week with a last-second victory over the Screven County Gamecocks, Saturday, Dec. 16. A lay-up by Keonte Gross sealed the win for the Eagles, 70-69.

In a game that provided thrills from the jump ball to the final buzzer, the standing-room-only crowd was entertained throughout.

The Eagles held a 35-31-halftime lead at the half. The Gamecocks came out of the locker and turned up the heat forcing Eagle turnovers that led to easy baskets for the Gamecocks.

The third quarter ended with the score tied 54-54. The fourth quarter started with both teams trading baskets. The Gamecocks went to a three-guard set and took the lead on three 3-point baskets. The Eagles made a defensive adjustment and was able to get some steals that led to easy baskets.

After Screven County made two free throws to go ahead by one with 4 seconds left on the clock, Jamar Holmes inbounded the ball to Kennith Scott who passed to Keonte Gross under the Eagle’s basket for the game winning lay-up as time ran out. Leading scorers were Kennith Scott with 21 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds, and 1 steal; Jamar Holmes, 18 points, 1 block, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals; and Keonte Gross, 16 points, 2 assists, 5 blocks, and 8 rebounds.

James Colbert with 14 points, and DaJuan Carter with 15 led Screven County.
