The Chatter Box

By Deborah Bennett

I read a news article last week calling attention to the fact that state officials were considering offering an "apology" for Georgia's role in slavery. If we are going to open that door, I suggest that we fling it wide open and offer additional suggestions that might also be included in the state's apology.

We could also offer apologies to the Native Americans for stealing their land and confining them to reservations; to those of Japanese heritage whose relatives living in this country were imprisoned when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor; to women for not allowing them to vote until 1920; to all aborted babies for denying them their right to life; to Christians for taking prayer out of schools and trying to force a society of "no religion" on them; to American workers for shipping their jobs overseas; to our children and grandchildren for polluting the environment to the point that the polar caps are melting; and the list goes on.

History is just that - history. No "apology" will change it or its effects on our present day society. Acknowledging our past mistakes is fine, but we should also strive to learn from them so that history does not repeat itself. That would eliminate the need for any future "apologies."
