MLK activities announced

The celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day began locally Sunday, Jan. 7, with a Unity Worship Service at the Nannie E. Williams United Methodist Church. Activities will continue with other events slated throughout the week.
The Mr.-Miss Dream Queen Pageant will take place 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, at the Morrison Grove Baptist Church.
A prayer breakfast, sponsored by the Millen Optimist Club, will be held 8 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Alma Mack, pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church will bring the message.
Rev. Mack is the founder and director of The Full Armor of God Biblical Counseling Cen- ter. She was Client Service Representative for the State of New Jersey. At Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital, Glen Gardner, N.J. and Coordinator of the African Methodist Episcopal Women in Ministry for the state of New Jersey. She holds a bachelor of arts degree, a master of divinity degree and a master's degree in Theology Counseling.
Tickets to the event are $5 and are available from any Millen Optimist Club member.
Saturday, Jan. 13, Bethel A.M.E. Church will host a MLK concert at the Millen Civic Center beginning at 5 p.m. Directing the concert, made up of local talent, will be MacArthur Haynesworth, minister of music at St. Phillips A.M.E. Church of Savannah. Admission is free.

A Service of Rededication is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday, at Zion Baptist Church. The keynote speaker will be the Rev. Marvin L. McRae, pastor of the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church of Augusta.
Rev. McRae attended the House of God Church and Macedonia Church of God in Christ in Lumber City. He was called into the ministry at the age of 17 and has served as Associate Minister at Beulah Grove Baptist Church, Tabernacle Baptist Church, Mt. Canaan Baptist Church and the House of God Holiness Church. He has served as pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church and Mt. Transfiguration Baptist Church. He holds a bachelor degree in Philosophy and Religion, a bachelor of art degree in History, a master's degree in Education Leadership, an educational specialist degree and is currently completing his doctorate degree in Education.

The annual parade through downtown Millen will take place 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 15. Leading the parade will be Grand Marshals Pam Dwight, Irene Drummer, Christine Stripling and Dr. Dianne McNeely, along with special guest, The Voices of Franklin and The Portal High School Band.
Following the parade, a youth activity will be held at the Bethel A.M.E. Church. The Voices of Franklin will perform as well as have their CD's and other material available for purchase. Winners in the parade will be announced at this time.
The guest speaker will be the Rev. Jonavon J. Harris, interim pastor of Second Mt. Mariah Baptist Church of Augusta. He serves as an educator at Thomas Walter Josey Comprehensive High School and is also an English instructor for the Paine College Upward Bound program. He is also the Youth Messenger of Second Mount Mariah on fifth Sundays. He is a published author of several literary works. He graduated magna cum laude from Paine College with a degree in English.
