Rain wreaks havoc on county roads
By Deborah Bennett

The condition of county dirt roads after several days of rain was a major topic of discussion at the Tuesday, Jan. 2, meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners.

Field Supervisor Grady Lane reported that dirt roads were all in "pretty bad shape." He also noted that county workers were doing their best to get around to all of the roads that needed work.

"They should be in full swing now," Lane said of county road crews.

Chairman James Henry called attention to the fact that requests for repairs to roads should be directed to the commissioners' office to insure a speedy response.

Lane was directed to contact the Jenkins County Sheriff's Department and request assistance in monitoring deliberate damage being done to some dirt roads in the county by 4-wheel trucks and ATV's.

In other business, Henry was reappointed chairman of the group, and commissioner Domingo Green was appointed vice-chairman. Troy Gay was also reappointed as county attorney.

The resignation of Chief Voter Registrar Rudine Becton was accepted.

Attorney Gay explained that a judge of the Ogeechee Judicial Circuit must appoint a replacement for Becton.

It was noted that the commissioners had received notification that the Ogeechee Behavioral Health Services mental health outpatient clinic would be closing Jan. 31, due to a lack of state funding. The commissioners agreed to contact state legislators and express their desire that funding for the agency be restored.

A list of four names was compiled for possible membership on the Jenkins County Hospital Authority board of directors. The individuals are to be contacted to determine if they are willing to serve, and then three of the names will be submitted to the hospital authority for its consideration.

The commissioners approved a motion to revise the county's vacation policy at the same time the county personnel policy is adopted.

The Tuesday, Feb. 6, meeting of the commissioners was reschedule to 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, due to a conflict with the Legislative Conference in Atlanta.

The meeting dates for the coming year were set for 9 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month and at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month.
