Eagles lose 1, win 1 on the court

Turnovers continue to be a problem for the Jenkins County High School Eagles basketball team.

Against Portal, Friday, Jan. 5, the Eagles committed 17 turnovers that Portal converted into points. The Eagles eventually lost to Portal 76-51. Portal outscored the Eagles 14 to 5 in the second quarter.

The Eagles are averaging 20 turnovers a game for the season.

"We work on drills in practice each day to reduce the number of turnovers in the game," stated Coach Willie Haynes.

"Kennith Scott is the only ex- perienced point guard that we have; we try to let someone else handle the ball so that the other teams don't just key on Kennith," he added.

Leading scorers for the Eagles were: Kennith Scott with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists; amd Keonte Gross with 12 points, 9 rebounds

In a thrilling game, Saturday, Jan. 6, that saw spectacular dunks, great defense and a total team effort, the Eagles defeated Claxton in a region contest 82- 57.

For the first time this season, five players scored in double figures. Tim Patterson playing his best game of the season led the team in rebounding with 10. Patterson scored 9 points. Reserve player Victor Chance scored 16 points off the bench and contributed 7 rebounds. Chance led the team in freethrow shooting sinking 6 of 9.

Others scoring in double figures were Chris Griffin with 14, Keonte Gross with 10, Jamar Holmes 12, and Kennith Scott 19.

The Eagles are 2-3 in the region and will host region opponent ECI Friday night, Jan. 12. JV boys will play at 4:30 p.m.
