RFLchili cook-off creates some heat
By Deborah Bennett
Some like it hot, and some not, but the heat was definitely on last Thursday, Jan. 25, as some of the county's best cooks entered their pots of chili in the Jenkins County Relay for Life (RFL) chili cook-off. The event was held at Planters Electric Membership Corporation.

The competition was stiff, and choosing a winner difficult, but in the end it was an entry by Martha Sue Wilson that garnered the most votes for the "Best Pot of Chili."
Bonnie Becton, an 11-year cancer survivor, was also recognized as the longest cancer survivor present.
The activity was the kick-off event for the American Cancer Society's (ACS) local RFLthat raised over $30,000 for the fight against cancer last year. This year's organizational team is hoping to do even better.
"Fifteen teams participated last year. This year we're hoping for 20," said Amanda Brown of the ACS as she encouraged participation in the event.

RFLis a fun-filled overnight event designed to celebrate survivorship and raise money for cancer research, prevention and early detection. Participants form teams, raise money through a variety of activities and walk non-stop throughout the night "because cancer doesn't sleep." RFLrepresents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, those who face cancer will be supported and that one day, cancer will be eliminated.
The 2007 RFLhas been set for Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19. For more information, contact Vicki Adams at First National Bank and Trust.
