Remembering Private Peevy
Neil Dickey, above, was among a large group who paid their respects to his late great-grandfather, Private Guilford Peevy. The Margaret Jones #27 United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) of Waynesboro hosted a memorial service for the Confederate War soldier at the Doubleheads Baptist Church cemetery in Screven County last week. Many of Peevy's descendents participated in the service, including grandchildren Willard Joyner, Gladys Dicky, Myrtle Jenkins, Ann Alstatt and the Rev. Cecil Peevy, who gave the benediction. The service also included a 21-gun salute, firing of the cannon and special music, including several period songs. A moment of silence was also observed for the 26 other Confederate soldiers who are buried in the cemetery. Participating organizations included Brigadier General John C. Carter Camp #207 Chil- dren of the Confederacy of Waynesboro, Ogeechee Rifles #941 Order of Robert E. Lee of Statesboro, Sons of Confederate Camps - Black Creek Volunteers #549 of Screven County, Buckhead Fort Lawton Brigade of Jenkins County, Ogeechee Rifles #941 of Bulloch County, Ebeneezer Rifles of Effingham County, E.
