Support our troops The war in Iraq was brought a little closer to home last week when word that Arthur Milton Jr., a "homegrown" young man, was seriously wounded in the conflict. He is the son of Arthur and Alice Milton of Millen and a 2004 graduate of Jenkins County High School. For most of us, it is easy to push publicized reports of the war to the back of our minds as we go about our daily activities, thinking only of our servicemen and women when we're watching the evening news or when we are reciting a compulsory prayer as we prepare for bed. We would do well to acknowledge, however, that every minute those brave young men and women are living the news we are only observing from the comfort of our homes. Our servicemen and women did not ask for the job, but willingly accepted the responsibility when they were called upon. Nor do they debate whether or not the United States should be in Iraq, but strive instead to perform their duties to the best of their abilities, representing their country with honor, courage and valor. Arthur Milton is one of many servicemen and women serving in the military who have local ties. We wish him a speedy recovery and extend a heartfelt, "Thank you," to Arthur and all the others who face danger daily in the battle for freedom. Our troops deserve the support of every American citizen. Whether we approve of the war or not, we must support our troops! Their loyalty and devotion to duty serve as shining examples of what it is to be a proud American. It is because of them, and those who served before them, that we can sit in the safety and comfort of our homes and enjoy life in the "land of the free and home of the brave." God bless our troops! |
