Committee seeks public input
Pre-Disaster Planning
By Deborah Bennett

Disasters strike every community at some point in time, including Jenkins County. Citizens who may recall incidents such as the record snowfall of February 1973 and other incidents that have occurred in the community through the years are being asked to provide that information to the local Pre- Disaster Planning Committee when it meets again Thursday, March 1.

Linda Grijalva, C.S.R.A. Regional Development Center planning and development specialist, said the information will be included in the Pre-disaster Mitigation Plan being developed for Jenkins County. Citizens may mail their recollections of previous disasters to: Linda Grijalva, C.S.R.A. Regional Development Center, 3023 River Watch Parkway, Suite A, Augusta, GA 30907-2016. They may also attend the Thursday, March 1, committee meeting at the City of Millen Municipal Building and relay their stories verbally.

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 encourages and rewards local and state pre-disaster planning. Communities that fail to develop a Pre-disaster Mitigation Plan would not be eligible for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) funds.

The Jenkins County Commissioners recently appointed a local Pre-Disaster Planning Committee to develop a Pre-Disaster Mitigation Plan for Jenkins County.
