Zion Baptist Church Zion Baptist Church will celebrate history beginning Saturday, Feb. 24, with a Celebrate: Black History workshop 10 a.m.-2 p.m. A black history program will be presented 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25. The theme for the two-day event is "Celebrate Jenkins County's Black History - linking the past to the present." Saturday's workshop is open to anyone ages 5 and up. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. During the workshop, participants will attend a four 45- minute sessions that include; The Spoken Word, where participants will look at black history through poetry and prose; Body 'n Soul, which focuses on the whole body both physical and mental; Spirit Raising, where participants will look at Negro spirituals and how they were used; and Creative Expressions, a class where participants will create art in honor of Black History Month. The workshop will include lunch, and each person attending is asked to donate a can good for a homeless shelter in the area. During the Sunday service, the spotlight will draw attention to black history in Jenkins County by focusing on the past through the African American churches of Millen and Jenkins County. The speaker for the occasion will be the Rev. William Blount, formerly of Millen and pastor of The Greater Young Zion Baptist Church in Augusta. Area churches are invited to attend and join in presenting the history of your churches and significant members that have made a positive contribution to our society.
