Darryl Drake, commander of Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) Camp #2102 the Buckhead-Fort Lawson Brigade, presented a check for $100 to Byron Scogins, commander of the late Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) C.V. Dwelle Post #2776 at the First District Convention of the American Legion held at Cindy's Café on Cotton Saturday, Feb. 24, in Millen.

Scogins is leading the effort in constructing a memorial near the courthouse for all Jenkins County war casualties. At present, the VFW post has raised approximately $2,000, but still has about $8,000 to go. All businesses and individuals are encouraged to support this cause.

Millen's American Legion Michael R. Waters Post #188 hosted the district convention, which is made up of posts from the southeast portion of Georgia.

Post #188 was recently recon- stituted after many years and was named for Michael Waters, a native of Millen who was killed in action during the Vietnam War. The post meets the first Tuesday of every month in the Senior Citizen Center in Millen. The next meeting will be 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 6.

The American Legion is also trying to establish a Women's Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion Squadron in Millen. If you are a veteran or the spouse, mother, daughter or son of a veteran, please come by and check us out.
