Library News
By Wilma Gainey Branch Manager

March is Youth Art Month, and that makes this the perfect time to come in to the library.

The beautiful art collection from the Jenkins County High School Art Department, under the direction of instructor, Linda Smith, is on display this month. Please come and take a look at this wonderful exhibit. You will certainly enjoy yourself. These talented young people deserve recognition for a job well done.

If you would like to join our "Friends of the Library" group, please come by the library to pick up your application. Not only will you be helping your library, you will be helping your community as well. "Friends" sponsor events and fund raise as well. Why not sign up your family today! Mark your calendars and come join your neighbors and friends for the first meeting of the "Friends of the Jenkins County Memorial Library" which will take place on April 18, at 9 a.m. in the multi-purpose room at the library. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

It's almost here! On Friday, March 23, at 4 p.m., we will be having SLAM & JAM 2007! It's going to be quite the event, so make sure that you don't miss what we hope will be the first of an annual series. Young people from right here in Jenkins County will be showing the audience that you don't have to be from some big city to rap, rhyme or write some seriously cool stuff. Plus, all participants and a good many of the audience members will win great prizes! Come see who gets what, who's saying what, and what's going on. Don't miss it!

New Books at JCML

FIND ME by Carol O'Connell ~ When the death toll of serial killer "Mack the Knife" exceeds 100 victims along historic Route 66 in America's heartland, Kathy Mallory, on vacation from her job with the NYPD, decides to give the locals a hand.

THE WATCHMAN by Robert Crais ~ Joe Pike, the intriguing, enigmatic partner of L.A. PI Elvis Cole, takes center stage in this intense thriller. To pay back an old debt, Pike is coerced into protecting Larkin Barkley, a hard-partying young heiress whose life is in danger. The enemy is shadowy, violent and relentless- but the fierce, focused Pike, one of the strongest characters in modern crime fiction, is equal to the challenge.

SHOPAHOLIC AND BABY by Sophie Kinsella ~ Kinsella's airhead heroine, Becky Bloomwood, is back, now married, pregnant and working as the head personal shopper for a brand-new London boutique. Kinsella's ode to baby blues is both sly and slapstick- and for now, at least, Becky is more lovably Lucille Ball than annoyingly Paris Hilton.

STORM RUNNERS by T. Jefferson Parker ~ Where is the line between right and wrong? And how close will one man get to crossing over that line?

THE ASTONISHING LIFE OF OCTAVIAN NOTHING: TRAITOR TO THE NATION Vol. 1 - THE POX PARTY by M. T. Anderson ~In this fascinating and eyeopening Revolution-era novel, Octavian, a black youth raised in a Boston household of radical philosophers, is given an excellent classical education. He and his mother, an African princess, are kept isolated on the estate, and only as he grows older does he realize that while he is well dressed and well fed, he is indeed a captive being used by his guardians as part of an experiment to determine the intellectual acuity of Africans.

ROAD TO PARIS by Nikki Grimes ~ For eight-year-old Paris Richmond, home was such a funny word. Because she and her older brother had moved from one foster home to another so often, it had come to mean not a place but a person. Malcolm, her brother, was the one constant in her life. When they run away from an abusive home, they seek refuge with their grandmother, who returns them to the foster-care system.

THE WINTER KNIGHTS BY Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell ~ This is book 8 in the Edge Chronicles series. Quint finally begins his training at the Knights Academy, Maris adjusts to life in Undertown, and Sanctaphrax shivers in anticipation of a legendary storm, while a storm of a different kind brews between sky-scholars and earth-scholars.
