Ag Line: Agriculture Awareness Week Governor Sonny Perdue and the Agriculture Advisory Commission have declared this week National Agriculture Awareness Week in the State of Georgia. This week was devoted to recognize the contributions of agriculture and agribusiness in the state. A celebration was held on Tuesday and featured several agricultural organizations throughout Georgia displaying food products and related information pertaining to Georgia agriculture. Agriculture is Georgia's oldest and largest industry, and it remains a leading source of jobs and income. Georgia has one of the nations most vital and diversified farm economies, leading the country in the production of poultry, pecans, peanuts, eggs, and forestry products. Georgia also is home to the world famous Vidalia onion. Not only is agriculture important to the state of Georgia, but in Jenkins County as well. Agriculture is still the largest industry in Jenkins County. While we may not have as many farmers as we used too, our farmers are working more acres and are more diversified in their operations. In other words, a large portion of the land is still being farmed and farmers are producing more of a variety of commodities. Just how valuable is Jenkins County agriculture? The following table has the value of the main commodities produced in the county. As one can see in the table, Jenkins County's agriculture industry still maintains a high value. This chart does not take into account the jobs that are provided on farms and businesses that depend on agriculture. The next time you see a farmer (or a county agent), pat them on the back!
