Fallen soldier remembered at Confederate service recently

Fallen soldier David Bailey was recently honored during a service at Sardis Baptist Church.

Margaret Jones Chapter #27 United Daughters of the Confederacy of Waynesboro hosted the confederate memorial service Sunday, Feb. 11.

Betty Trenter, president of UDC, welcomed guests and gave the invocation. Adam Bazemore, a member of Black Creek Volunteers #549 of Screven County, led the pledges and salutes to the flags. Nell Bailey Headly, greatgreat great-granddaughter, sang "Deep River," and Kaye Bailey Stevens, great-great-greatgranddaughter, gave the family history. Steve Burke, a member of Burke Sharpshooters of Waynesboro, gave the eulogy of Co. K 32nd Ga. Infantry, of which David Bailey was a member. Betty Trenter dedicated the stone.

Wreaths were placed by the family, represented by greatgranddaughter, Grace Bailey Whisenant; Brigadier General John C. Carter Camp #207 Children of the Confederacy, repre- sented by great-great-greatgreat granddaughter, Tabbitha Reddick; and Margaret Jones Chapter #27 UDC, represented by bestower of crosses Dot Cauley.

Don Bazemore, a member of Black Creek Volunteers #549 of Screven County, and his son, Adam, presented the flag to the widow, Elizabeth Skinner Bailey, portrayed by Brenda Lackman. She was escorted by her husband, Frank Lackman.

Both Brenda and Frank are members of Black Creek Volunteers Re-enactors of Burke County.

The flag was later presented to great-granddaughter, Cecilia Bailey McMillan, who was in the hospital and unable to attend.

Mary Hargrove led the singing of "Dixie," and a 21-gun salute was given by the re-enactors, after which a cannon salute was given by Jason Quick, a member of 32nd Ga. Battery C Artillery Re-enactors of Burke County. Jennifer Mansell played "Taps" on the flute.

Elbert Youmans, husband of great-great-great-granddaughter, Ann Bailey Stevens, gave the benediction.
