County cleanup day set for April 14 It is spring cleaning time in Jenkins County. Millen Better Hometown, (MBH) Jenkins County Chamber of Commerce, Jenkins County Commissioners and City of Millen are sponsoring a cleanup day throughout the county Saturday, April 14. During the month of April over 250 groups will work to improve Georgia communities during this year's Cleanup and Keep Georgia Beautiful Month. The event, organized statewide by Keep Georgia Beautiful, is part of the nation's largest cleanup, beautification and community improvement program. MBH members will be at the Millen Community House 8 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. April 14 to give out gloves, trash bags and vests for those participating. Groups may also pick up these items from the chamber office during the week of April 9-14. Participants in the cleanup day are asked to pick up trash until noon and bring the bags of trash to the Jenkins County Courthouse square immediately after finishing. The City of Millen will participate in the cleanup effort by picking up trash city-wide prior to April 14. City residents who have tires to dispose of should have them on the curb by Thursday, April 12. County residents are encouraged to leave difficult to dispose of items such as white goods (refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers), oil, scrap metal and tires at the nearest county dumpster. There are scrap metal dealers in the county who purchase used metal such as abandoned vehicles. Call the chamber office at 982-5595 for the names of these dealers and also for assistance in moving white goods. Items may be taken to the Jenkins County Landfill April 12-14. Tipping fees will be waived for personal disposal. No commercial disposal. Everyone is invited to join in the activities. Individuals and groups interested in being part of the effort should call the chamber office at 982-5595. |
