David Rountree, 77, of Millen died March 27 Mr. David Edward Rountree, 77, of Millen died Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at home following a lengthy battle with leukemia. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, at Millen United Methodist Church. Burial followed in the Millen Cemetery. Mr. Rountree was born in Mitchell County and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the retired owner of Edenfield Feed and Seed. He was a member of Millen United Methodist Church, where he was past president of the Methodist Men. Mr. Rountree was inducted into the Mitchell County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. He was the first athlete in Mitchell County to be offered a scholarship to the University of Georgia in football. He was assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for Buckhead Academy from 1972 to 1973. He was a former member of the Millen Lions Club, served on the Jenkins County Hospital Authority, where he later served as chairman, and was a charter member of the Magnolia Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Jean Edenfield Rountree; two sons, David A. (Bubba) Rountree of Savannah and Tim E. (Remona) Rountree of Kennesaw; daughter, Nancy (Stevie) Williams of Albany; and four grandchildren, Stephanie W. (Heath) Fountain, Staci A. Williams, Andy N. Rountree and Bess C. Rountree. Pallbearers were members of the 1972 Buckhead Academy football team and others. Visitation was held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 29, at Crowe- Fields Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the United Hospice or the Millen Cemetery Fund. |
