Local student receives honorable mention at State Ag Day contest A Jenkins County student was recognized at the State Ag Day contest sponsored by the Georgia Department of Agriculture and Commissioner Tommy Irvin and Georgia Agriculture in the Classroom Council Inc. Jenkins County High School student Justin S. Lanier re- ceived an honorable mention in the 9-12 grade art category. Students in grades 4-8 and 9-12 were eligible to enter the essay portion of the contest with the theme of "Agriculture - for a Secure Future." The art contest was open to kindergarten through 12th grade. Agriculture Commissioner Irvin invited all the winners to the special awards presentation at the State Capitol in March. First, second and third place finishers received cash awards, and all the winners, including the honorable mentions, received medals and certificates. The commissioner also held a breakfast for the winners and their guests at the agriculture building prior to the ceremony. Featured during the ceremony were Gov. Sonny Perdue, who issued a proclamation, and Logan Scott, Teen Ms. Georgia Agriculture, who assisted Irvin in presenting the awards. |
