Four local students were among the winners of an essay contest sponsored by East Georgia College (EGC) and Swainsboro Technical College (STC) extended to students in Candler, Emanuel, Jenkins, Johnson and Treutlen counties.

The topic of the essay was "If you could change the curriculum in your school what would you change and why?"

Over 300 students participated in the event, and the submissions were required to be the original work of the student. Essays were judged on originality, development, grammar and style.

Contest participants, students, parents and faculty from the two colleges gathered for the awards ceremony held Tuesday, March 27, in the auditorium at EGC.

Each participant in the contest received a certificate and was recognized by Dr. John Black, president of EGC and Dr. Glenn Deibert, president of STC.

First place winners in each category received a $200 savings bond; second place received a $100 savings bond; and third place received a $50 savings bond. Jenkins County was recognized as having the highest participation.
