Eagles play well but suffer losses

The Jenkins County High School varsity Eagles baseball team continued to play well this past week despite four losses on the diamond.

"It's been a tough week losing three region games by a total of fours runs. The guys are really coming together and playing some good baseball. Boyd Sasser tied the stolen base record for the season this past week that has been held for nine seasons by Tai Brannen," Coach Wendell Clark said of the team's efforts.

On March 30, the Eagles fell 2-0 to Bryan County. Leading hitters were: Bob Hoke 1-2, and Caleb Chance and Boyd Sasser 1-3. Losing pitcher was Aaron Comstock.

Coach Wendell Clark commented, "It was a well-played game on both sides. A lot of great plays made by both teams."

The Eagles lost 5-4 in a hardfought game against Savannah Country Day April 3.

Leading hitters were as follows: Spencer Clark and Josh Lee went 3-4; Caleb Chance 2- 3 with a double; Zac Clark and Boyd Sasser went 2-4 with doubles; and Trevor Weathersby went 1-1 with a double. Losing pitcher in relief was Aaron Comstock. Avery McAlpine started and pitched well for three innings.

Screven County defeated the Eagles 13-5. Leading hitters were: Boyd Sasser 3-3, 2 RBI's, 3 stolen bases; Justin Lanier 2-3 with a homerun and a double; and Avery McAlpine and Trevor Weathersby 1-3.

Coach Clark commented, "Losing pitcher Justin Lanier had a great hitting team. He pitched well with Spencer Clark and Trevor Weathersby coming in relief."

On April 10, the Eagles suffered another close defeat by Portal 3-2. Leading hitters were: Justin Lanier 2-4 with a double; Will Bragg 1-1 with a double; and Josh Lee and Aaron Comstock, 1-3 with a RBI each. Losing Pitcher was Aaron Comstock.

"He pitched a great game allowing only three hits and no earned runs. He only faced five batters over the limit," said Coach Clark.

B-Team

The B-team Eagles defeated Bryan County 5-3 on March 30.

Leading hitters were: Robert Sipes 2-3 with 2 RBI's; Josh Lee 1-1; Dontavious Young 1-2; and Ethan Conway 1-3. Josh Lee was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts and only one walk. Trevor Weathersby got the save coming in with bases loaded and one out by striking out the last two batters in the last inning.

The B-team is 9-2 on the year.

The varsity Eagles will face E.C.I. 6 p.m. Friday, April 20, at home and Claxton 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, away. The Bteam will play Southeast Bulloch 6 p.m. Thursday, April 19, away; ECI, Friday, April 20, 4 p.m. home; Statesboro Saturday, April 21, 9 a.m. away and SEB at 11 a.m. away; and Claxton Tuesday, April 24, 6 p.m. away.
