This past weekend, eleven 4- H'ers traveled to Athens to compete in the State 4-H & FFA

Dairy Judging Competition. Junior Competitors were: Irene Dieteman, Tyler Gearheart, Jessica Herrmann, Jaymee Moore and Tabitha Trent. Senior Competitors were: Charlotte Davis, Danielle Dieteman, Kyle Gearheart, Cierra Joyner, Becca Rich and Melissa White.

The junior participants had to place five sets of cows and then give reasons on one set. Seniors had to also place five sets of cows but they had to talk 3 sets. Talking a class, or giving reason on it is when the individual goes into a room with a judge and in a clear, professional manner states the reasons why they placed the cows in the order they did. All reasons should be memorized upon presentation.

The typical teams that compete in dairy judging come from counties with a large dairy industry who have been judging for years. Being most of these kids first time ever really looking at a cow, they were at a disadvantage. However, you would have never known last Saturday was their first go round. Our junior team came in 5th place and our senior team brought home 4th place honors. Jessica Herrmann was recognized as the 3rd highest scoring junior in the state!! There were 11 counties represented at the event. If you see any of these students, please congratulate them. They all worked extremely hard and it paid off. They did an outstanding job representing Jenkins County.

The 4-H Project SAFE (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) Shotgun Team has been practicing for weeks for the district match this Saturday, April 21.
