This past Saturday was the Southeast District 4-H Project S.A.F.E. (Shooting, Awareness, Fun, and Education) Shotgun competition at Hanging Rocks Plantation. Eleven counties sent 248 shooters to qualify for the state Project S.A.F.E. match on May 12. To qualify for state, junior 4-H'ers must break 16/ 25 and seniors must break 20/ 25 targets.
Jenkins County had a total of 26 4-H'ers participate, with 19 junior and 3 senior 4-H'ers qualifying for state. Other highlights of the day included Jenkins County's junior team placing second. Matthew Rocker had a perfect score and advanced to the shoot-off to compete for the district individual title.
Project S.A.F.E. is an excellent program sponsored by the Georgia Extension Service that teaches leadership, safety, and team work. We are very fortunate to have dedicated volunteer coaches who work tirelessly to make this program a success. Our Project S.A.F.E. team practices every Sunday from the start of February to the middle of May.
Special thanks go to the Collision Center Body Shop and Glen Davis Insurance for sponsoring the targets needed for Saturday's event. We would also like to thank Mr. Robert Jenkins of Hanging Rocks Plantation for donating the use of his facilities.
