Many have been known to say that teaching is a thankless profession. There are, however, exceptions to every
rule. Jenkins County resident Thomas G. Harris was recently honored by two of his former students.
Mr. Harris, who taught at Armuchee High School, Rome, for
41 years was recently contacted by two former students, Richard (Rick)
and Deborah Gilbert, who informed him that they were initiating a scholarship at the school in his honor. The Thomas G. Harris Scholarship, a 4-year award, will provide room and board for students who are attending college on the HOPE scholarship and will be awarded May 10.
Mr. Harris acknowledged that he was somewhat surprised by the Gilberts' recognition. He also noted that he always enjoyed his years of teaching, and it was nice to be remembered by former students.
In the scholarship document, the Gilberts exalt Mr. Thomas for his years of service, commitment and counsel to students at the school.
Mr. Harris was a math teacher and basketball coach at
Armuchee High School. He returned to his home community of Jenkins County upon
his retirement in 1987.
