Garden clubs hear facts about litter

The Azalea and Magnolia Garden clubs held their April meeting at the Bethany Home meeting room.

Members were served refreshments by hostesses Sandy Lanier, Virginia McBride and Jane Johnson.

Arrangements of fresh flowers were placed on the residents dining tables by Garden Club members as a community service project.

Azalea president Bobbie Reid and Magnolia president Caroline Beard reminded members of the countywide clean-up being sponsored by Millen Better Home Town. Both clubs plan to participate and support the project.

Jane Johnson presented the program about litter. She told the clubs the the Georgia Department of Transportation spent over $13 million picking up litter on state highways last year. The Georgia anti-litter campaign "Litter - It Costs You" emphasizes the education of both youth and adults as a major factor in cleaning up the state. Johnson also added that, while we are all aware that our litter is ugly and detracts from the beauty of our state, it also affects our health and safety, environment, the economy and harms wildlife.

The Garden Clubs of Georgia, whose mission is beautification, conservation and education, encourages everyone to get involved in neighborhood cleanups to realize the necessity of taking care of our environment today in order to secure a better tomorrow.
