Girls track team boasts two state champions

Jenkins County High School was well represented at the girls' state track meet in Albany, May 3-5. As a team, the girls finished in sixth place.

Individually, Latonia Lovett became state champion in the long jump, with a jump of 18-1 ½. This is Latonia's first state title. She also competed in the triple jump and the 100-meter dash, placing second in both events.

With these top finishes, Latonia was in the running for the High Points Award but was beaten out by a few points to a girl from Landmark Christian.

Ashley Ball successfully defended her shot put state championship from 2006 with a winning throw of 39-4. She also competed in the discus finishing fifth.

Also competing at the state meet was Andrea Pittman who finished seventh in the 3200 and 10th in the 1600. Coach Chuck Sanders said he would like to congratulate each girl, and he will also miss his seniors, Latonia, Ashley and Jennifer.

"It will be hard replacing these talented girls next track season," he said. "I wish them the best of luck in their careers after high school."
