The March meeting of the Millen Woman's Club was held at the home of the late Dr. Hunter Rackley. As members were greeted on the beautiful sun porch, refreshments were served by hostesses, Marilyn Knight and Wilma Leonard. President Diane Wade called the meeting to order, and Veronica Cowart gave the inspiration on having an attitude of faith. Marilyn Knight continued her Leadership Tips on handling stress, giving several ideas for tackling daily task lists.

Carolyn Fields presented the program on CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) for children. She presented a video showing how much CASA volunteers mean to children in foster care. Jenkins County is in dire need of these CASA volunteers who are the eyes and ears of the court. These advocates consider what is in the best interest of the children.

The First District Woman's Club meeting was hosted by the Millen Woman's Club at Krystal's Taste of Kountry March 3. Some of the local members who attended were, from left, Sandy Lanier Gilda Rackley, Veronica Cowart, Barbara Bowers, Brenda Sharpe, Diane Wade, Kay Green, Anette Head, Carolyn Fields and Marilyn Knight.
Mrs. Fields (Home Life) showed a video on recognizing the signs of a stroke and stressing the importance of recognizing these signs and getting the patient to the hospital as soon as possible. Gilda Rackley (Conservation) informed members that it is time to clean out birdbaths and put out bird feeders. Veronica Cowart (Legislative) discussed the controversial topic of state funding of Tamiflu and gave tips on writing an effective letter to a legislator.

Jennifer Wilson reported that the Millen club will not be able to have the Spring Fashion Show due to a lack of response from the department stores. The stores contacted do not seem to be interested in coming to a small town at this time. She will continue to work on a revised version of this project for a later date.

President Wade reported that the First District Spring Meeting hosted by Millen Woman's Club at Krystal's was a success. At this district meeting our club won several awards. The family of Anette and Mike Head were named First District Family of the Year. Diane Wade was named First District Citizen of the Year. In Public Affairs, our club received the first place district award, and in Conservation, second place.

The Jenkins County Memorial Library recently received a Grassroots Arts Grant to sponsor a creative writing contest for young people. Fifty students participated in this project, called "Slam'n Jam 2007," and the top ten writings were read at a reception at the library on March 23. The Millen Woman's Club participated by donating $50 to defray the costs of refreshments and help pay for the prizes for the young writers.

Members were encouraged to participate in upcoming community events such as the Friends of the Library meeting; Jenkins County Hospital Health Fair, May 10; Relay for Life, May 18-19.
