Smoke invades Jenkins County

Jenkins County citizens got a taste of what residents in South Georgia have been experiencing for weeks when they awakened Sunday morning, May 20, to the smell of burned wood and a thick cloud of smoke obscuring visibility. The smoke and smell drifted from a wildfire near Waycross that has burned thousands of acres, forced the closing of schools and businesses, evacuation of homes and re-routing of traffic on I-95. With no promise of rain in the forecast, the fire continues to devour everything in its path. (Photo contributed)
