Library News Jenkins County Memorial Library is more than just books! We invite you to come by to check us out - you'll be glad you did. We have everything from current non-fiction to best-sellers, including large print books, as well as an excellent collection of books for kids from birth to teens and Read-Along Books and tapes for younger children. We have one of the best collections of poetry and plays in the state and a great reference section. Know someone who has vision problems? We can get them Books for the Blind. And our membership in PINES means that our patrons can borrow books and other materials from almost any public library in Georgia. Looking to catch up on the news? The Millen News, The Sylvania Telephone, The True Citizen, The Augusta Chronicle and The Savannah Morning News are all here. More interested in magazines? Try National Geographic, Discover, Georgia Trend, Times, Consumer Report and Smithsonian, or Your Big Backyard and National Geographic for Kids for the younger readers. We currently have 14 public computers for use by adults, plus 2 more for kids which offer educational materials and games for children. We provide copier, fax, laminating and printer services to the community, as well as a multipurpose room for use by the public. We host educational and cultural programs such as the Jenkins County High School Art Exhibit as well as professional entertainers such as Harry O'Donoghue. Our staff provides assistance with filling out forms and other paperwork. We assist those who are unfamiliar with computers with the following programs: Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and help students with MLA formatting. We have story and craft time each week for younger children. We provide Bookmobile Service to two counties - Jenkins and Screven - offering books, crafts, storytime, and other resources for shut-ins and those who are unable to travel to the public library. Our staff is happy to speak to various civic groups, businesses and other organizations about resources offered by the library. We also take part in community projects such as Christmas in Millen, the Fall Festival, Relay for Life and school programs. This year we read to Pre-K, kindergarten and first- and secondgraders at the Jenkins County Elementary School. Our "Friends of the Library" group is a non-profit organization devoted to supporting the library's mission, which includes free access to information and materials, educational and recreational programs, and lifelong intellectual and cultural development. "Friends" help raise funds for and host special programs, promote awareness of library events and resources, encourage people to vote on library related issues, and provide refreshments at library events. (Want to become a "Friend"? Just stop by the library!) Each year the library sponsors a Vacation Reading Program. This year the theme is "Reading Takes You Everywhere." Kids can travel the country without leaving their front porch. We kicked off the fun on June 2 here at the library. Please come by the library for a summer of fun!
