Members of VFW Post 2776 of Millen recently visited the veterans in Bethany Nursing Center. A U.S. flag, a U.S. flag lapel pin and a VFW poppy were presented to each veteran.
Members of the VFW state that they are concerned that these veterans may be feeling isolated and alone, and that the primary purpose of their visit was to assure the veterans that they are recognized and appreciated.
The VFW members feel that society has changed over the years in its perspective of veterans and that, unlike when military members returned from Vietnam, veterans are now held in high esteem and are frequently viewed as heroes.
The VFW members state that they were honored to share their thoughts and perceptions with these veterans, many of whom served in World War II.
Cards with the VFW address and phone number were handed out in order to facilitate communication and support.
Byron Scogins, commander, has committed to hold a minimum of one VFW meeting each quarter at Bethany Nursing Center, so these veterans may be able to participate in veteran activities.
If anyone in the community is aware of a need the VFW can fill, please contact Scogins at 982-2847.
