Garden club observes National Garden Week June 3-9

The Azalea Garden Club, a member of Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. (GCG,) joins national garden clubs in acknowledging National Garden Week that began Sunday, June 3, and continues through Saturday, June 9.

The first garden club in America was founded in Athens in 1891. Since that time, it has grown from 12 members in Georgia to over 13,000.

The Garden Club of Georgia's mission statement is Beautification, Conservation and Education.

Members work together to make Georgia more beautiful with activities ranging from flower shows, garden tours and educational seminars. GCG is also involved in the preservation of Georgia's historic landmarks, community beautification projects, outreach projects for today's youth end legislative advocacy on behalf of conservation, historic preservation and protection of natural resources.

Garden clubs also offer op- portunities to expand knowledge through courses to members on basic gardening and landscaping, floral design, and the environment and how to protect it.

Visit the Jenkins County Memorial Library for more information on joining or organizing a garden club, and also to view a creative floral design placed by the Azalea Garden Club.

GCG's special youth project is Mountains to the Sea. It is a new web site that is a learning tool for children of all ages. Four campers begin their journey in the Georgia mountains and learn about the environment all the way to the sea.

It will teach youth about Georgia's special types of terrain, plants and animals in a fun and unusual way. Travel with four cyber campers and experience this spectacular journey that will continue The Garden Club of Georgia's Special Youth Project. Visit this web site at www.uga/edu/gardenclub/m2s.
