County asked to fund JCRD position Difficulty finding someone to head the Jenkins County Recreation Department (JCRD) has prompted the board of directors to request that the job be made a county position. The proposal was presented during the Tuesday, June 5, meeting of the Jenkins County Commissioners by recreation board member Sandra Sherrod. Sherrod explained that efforts to secure a director were hampered by the salary that the JCRD was financially able to offer. Making the position a county job would assist in that area. "The director would come under the supervision of the county, and the other employees would be hired by the board members," she said. Sherrod also noted that, currently, the recreation department has "no" employees, and that board members were doing what they could to keep the organization running. In addition, participants in a program offered through the Jenkins County Family Enrichment Center were working several days a week mowing the grass and attending to other needs at the recreation complex. Sherrod also announced that she had offered her resignation from the JCRD board of directors, effective June 30. The commissioners agreed to have the county attorney examine legal issues involving the request prior to responding. The commissioners approved a motion to hold a workshop for the development of strategy and guidelines to aid them in dealing with requests from local citizens concerning the maintenance of roads by the county. As a result, the group delayed taking action on a request from New Testament Church and agreed to consider all previous requests during the workshop. A request from Bill Hillis and Agnes Hillis to allow the division of a portion of their property into a lot that was less than two acres was approved. County attorney Troy Gay determined that the county Subdivision Ordinance did not apply to the matter. Final approval of the Carlton Oaks Subdivision was delayed until such time as a consultant could review the property for compliance issues and a decision concerning trash disposal for the area could be determined. Other actions taken included the following. + A position on the Ogeechee Community Service Board of Directors is to be advertised; + Nomination of citizens for consideration as members of the Jenkins County Hospital Authority Board was tabled; and + A contract for water/ methane testing was awarded to Analytical Services. Several bids were awarded as follows: + Pest control - I Spy; + Lawn care - R.C. Lawn Care; + Air conditioning for Jenkins County Memorial Library - Jenco; and + Air conditioning for Senior Citizens Center - Dyess Electrical. |
