Charles Yancy of Millen was involved in a fatal accident in Tattnall County Tuesday, June 12, that claimed the life of the passenger in his vehicle, Charles Griffin Dowdy Jr., 50, of Rhine.

Yancy and Dowdy were traveling eastbound on Hwy. 292 in Yancy's 2002 Chevrolet truck when they met a log truck driven by Aldum Glisson of Uvalda traveling westbound.

Just before the vehicles met, a tire on the log truck blew out. The tire ripped off the metal bar that supports the mud flap behind the wheel. The metal bar traveled across the highway where it penetrated the right side windshield of Yancy's vehicle, striking Dowdy in the head. Trooper First Class Michael Reddish, who investigated the accident, said Dowdy died instantly.

Hugh Glisson, the brother of Aldum Glisson, was following the log truck and saw the tire disintegrate.

"I saw the pieces of tire come off, and I saw something hit the windshield of the pickup truck. I saw the windshield break, but I thought a piece of rubber hit the windshield. I had no idea this had happened," said Hugh Glisson.

Hugh Glisson said he continued to follow his brother who was trying to find a spot to get off the highway. When Aldum Glisson was able to get the truck safely off the highway, the two returned and discovered the tragedy.

Senior Trooper Kyle Sapp who assisted with the wreck investigation said it was one of those accidents that cannot be explained.
