BOE rejects bids for old Primary School property

The Jenkins County Board of Education rejected all bids received for the sale of the old Jenkins County Primary School property during the group's Monday, June 18, meeting.

Chairman Carroll Gay noted that the bids received were far below the unofficial appraised value of the property. Bids received were: Odell Williams, $10,000; Wilson Southland Properties, $15,001; and Franklin Garvin Construction, $20,000.

The property will be re-advertised for bids.

A spending resolution for the months of July and August was approved to allow the BOE time to develop a budget for Fiscal year 2007-2008.

The successful bidder for supplying milk to the Jenkins County School Food Services was Dairyland with an annual bid of $69,549. Derst Baking Company was the successful bidder for providing bread products with an annual bid of $24,049.

In other action, a committee was appointed to formulate procedures for use of the new gymnatorium, including a Code of Conduct. Those to serve on the committee include: school principals, basketball coaches, athletic director, two BOE members, maintenance supervisor, Jenkins County Athletic Booster Club member, two community members, representative from Jenkins County Commissioners and representative from Millen City Council.

Other actions taken by the BOE included:

+ Approved copier proposal from Digital in the amount of $2,542.98 monthly;

+ Approved motion to terminate scanner contract with Ikon with assistance from legal counsel;

+ Approved fundraising projects for Jenkins County Middle School;

+ Approved the resignation of Stacey Manson, bus driver;

+ Approved the employment of Chris Landing as a teacher at Jenkins County Elementary School, pending acceptance into the Tapp program;

+ Approved employment of JROTC officers Col Kenneth Wade, commissioned, and Sgt. Renee McClinton, non-commissioned;

+ Approved employment of Annie Young as Jenkins County School Food Service assistant; and

+ Approved employment of Walter Thomas as bus coordinator.
