Commissioners seek input on Historic Preservation Ordinance
By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

A public hearing will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, for the purpose of allowing public input on the possible adoption of a Historic Preservation Ordinance by the Jenkins County Commissioners. The group decided to hold the hearing and postpone a vote on the matter during their Tuesday, June 19, meeting.

The City of Millen recently adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance and established a Historic Preservation Committee as one of the steps involved in its effort to become a "Certified Local Government."

When that committee met, members decided to ask the county to join the effort, making historic preservation a countywide effort.

In other action, the commissioners approved Phase II of the Carlton Oaks subdivision, pending completion of requirements noted by the consultant who inspected the site. It was noted that the approval did not include acceptance of the roads in the subdivision into the county road system at this time.

Several county employees met with the commissioners seeking clarification of several sections of the county's proposed Policy and Procedures Manual.

Issues discussed included vacation pay, annual leave, monitoring of county offices and travel expenses. The commissioners agreed to review the sections.

Nine names were offered to fill three seats on the Jenkins County Hospital Authority Board of Directors. They were John Roy Clifton, F.A. Black and Charles Bragg; C. H. Elmore, Mike Lane and Jackie Brown Yancey; and Jeff Brantley, Betty Echols and Daisy Smith. Selection of the successful candidates will be made by members of the hospital authority.

Corey Priest was named to fill the unexpired term of Sandra Sherrod, who recently resigned, on the Jenkins County Recreation Department Board of Directors. Myrtis Reese was named to serve a 3-year term on the recreation board.

Other actions taken included the decision to advertise for bids for the painting of the interior of the Jenkins County Senior Citizens Center, approval of an ad in Jenkins County Athletic Booster Club program and approval of a contract with Stantec for work at the county landfill.
