MPD investigates burglaries
By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

The Millen Police Department (MPD) is currently investigating a string of burglaries that have occurred throughout the city between Wednesday, June 27, and Monday, July 9. While most of the burglaries have taken place at local business establishments, one local residence was also hit.

A MPD incident report indi- cates that two black men wearing black clothing and masks kicked in the back door of an 1107 East Winthrope Avenue residence around 3 a.m. Monday, July 9, tied up two Hispanic residents and made off with approximately $1,000 in cash.

Burglars hit Fries Frozen Foods, Recreation Drive, Sunday, July 8, around 9:42 p.m. and returned Monday, July 9, at approximately 2:20 a.m. to attempt to break into the company's safe, which appeared to have been torched. Their efforts were unsuccessful and nothing appeared to have been taken. However, several items and a small amount of cash were taken during the first burglary. The July 8 burglary was discovered by the owner, and the July 9 break-in by a MPD officer on routine patrol.

On Saturday, July 7, a MPD officer discovered around 2:40 a.m. that the door of McTeer Tire Company, U.S. Hwy. 25 North, was broken. The owner was contacted, and it was determined that nothing was missing from the premises.

Friday, June 29, was a busy night for the MPD officers with three businesses being burglarized on North Gray Street. During routine rounds around 1 a.m., an officer discovered that the front doors of NAPA, Elegant Nails and Millen Loan and Finance had all been broken. It did not appear that entry was gained into Millen Loan and Finance, and the incident reports did not indicate that anything was taken from the other two business establishments.

On Wednesday, June 27, a passerby noticed a broken glass door at Panda Express, Winthrope Avenue, and alerted law enforcement around 12:55 a.m. The owner indicated that approximately $300 was taken from the premises.

Investigation of the burglaries is ongoing by the MPD. Anyone with any information should call 982-2750.
