Syl-View Happenings On Friday, we were entertained by Bill Kellicker and Doug Schriner. There were country songs, some rock and roll and gospel music. The residents were enjoying the music and some were dancing. Following the music program, we served hot dogs, chips, dill pickles and ice cold Cokes. There is fun on these summer afternoons. We were served ice cream by Rosby McKenzie of United Hospice of Swainsboro. Ice cream is a special treat, and we had chocolate syrup, pineapple and nuts to the delight of the residents. I provided birthday cake as we celebrated the birthday of longtime volunteer, Don Scarborough. It was scheduled as a garden party but with the temperature soaring, we brought the flowers inside and filled a decorated wheelbarrow with potted plants, added a welcome to the garden sign in pastel colors, a string of garden lights, a mint green embroidered cloth, and we had instant garden party indoors with air conditioning. The garden is beautiful with lush green ferns, red flowers, coleus in varied colors and zinnias, marigolds and verbena filling the flowerbeds. Alma Almand is our master gardener and she has cucumbers and tomatoes in her container garden. Anne and Jan Gay have a front corner of the courtyard with angel trumpet and canna lilies. Nora Dell Bragg's memorial garden is a riot of color with oldfashioned beauty. On Monday afternoon, the Rocky Ford Church held worship services with music and Bible study. Following the services, the residents enjoyed their first watermelon cutting of the summer. We appreciate the volunteers who make this possible. July is half-gone, but we have many celebrations left on our July calendar. We will remember the anniversary of the first man to walk on the moon in 1969, and the residents will enjoy moon pies. We also have an Elvis Day on Friday, July 27, with the music of Glen Walden. We will have Cow Appreciation Day as we say goodbye to July on the 30th of the month. I will attend a state board meeting as we plan for the activity convention in the fall. So many blessings are ours, and we are grateful for our residents, staff, volunteers and family members. We give thanks to The Millen News for the privilege of having a column, and we invite people of Millen and Jenkins County to visit us soon and take part in a Syl-View happening. |
