Big Horse Creek celebrates heritage
By Field Manley Intern
Big Horse Creek Baptist Church members have spent the past year preserving their 160- year heritage.
Dot Cauley has spearheaded a huge cemetery clean-up project along with church and family members of people buried there.
"We've always had someone keeping it tidy," Cauley said. "But right now we are doing an extensive cleanup."
Cauley and company have been marking the graves as well as cleaning old headstones. "We have been working with a census to identify the graves and have marked about fifty to sixty percent of them," she said.
For Cauley, one of the project's greatest rewards was locating the lost grave of one of her own ancestors.
"I was able to dig up my great, great, great, great, grandmother's headstone," she said. "This was really a unique experience."
