County to confront loitering issue
By Deborah Bennett Millen News Editor

Loitering on county property located within the City of Millen was an issue tackled by the Jenkins County Commissioners during the group's Tuesday, Aug. 7, meeting.

By common consent, the commissioners agreed to instruct the county attorney to revise the county's Public Nuisance Ordinance to include provisions to restrict trespassing and prohibit loitering on county property. Property specifically discussed was the parking lot of the Jenkins County Hospital where local teens are known to gather.

The present ordinance does not address county-owned property within the City of Millen which made the amendment necessary.

In other business, the commissioners discussed options available to them concerning the purchase of a new motor grader for the Road Department. Funds for the purchase were included in the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) approved by voters.

Jenkins County Sheriff Tim Fields called attention to his department's need for two patrol vehicles, one of which was also included in planned SPLOST projects. Sheriff Fields noted that he is considering the purchase of a truck as one of the vehicles due to the fact that it could be turned over to the Road Department after its use by the sheriff's department.

Action on a request for a "director's fee" for the Jenkins County Ambulance Service director died for lack of a motion which means the director's salary will remain "as it is."

A contract with Analytical Services Inc. was approved in the amount of $749 for additional well testing at the county landfill. It was noted that contaminates were found at the site and the county will need to consult the Environmental Protection Division about the matter.

The county administrator was instructed to seek bids for performance of the county's annual financial audit.
