State Sen. J.B. Powell announced last week that the City of Millen has been awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for utility improvements.

Sen. Powell, who helped secure the grant, commented, "I am pleased with the decision to award these funds to the City of Millen and Jenkins County. Gov. Perdue, my colleagues in the House and Department of Community Affairs all played significant roles, and I commend their hard work and commitment to our constituents' needs."

The grant funds awarded the City of Millen will be used for sewer improvements.

Georgia was awarded more than $42 million in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for the State CDBG and CHIP programs. More than $34.2 million allocated for CDBG awards will be used to support projects in 71 Georgia communities.

The CDBG and CHIP programs are administered by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs which uses funds allocated through HUD to support local initiatives to improve living conditions and economic opportunities throughout the state.
