Local health department to conduct Flu Drill

The East Central Health District and the Jenkins County Health Department will conduct a mass immunization drill Oct. 2-4. The purpose of the drill is to test the organizations' capacity to provide mass immunizations in the event of a biological disaster. By conducting this drill throughout the district, officials note that it helps test, measure and validate the district and county plans pertaining to a pandemic influenza event and the district's response.

Local citizens and families are encouraged to participate in this kick-off Flu Immunization Program by getting vaccinated on these days against influenza (flu) and pneumococcal disease, pending vaccine availability. Illnesses associated with these diseases can be life threatening.

Participants will be educated about Avian (bird flu) and pandemic influenza. They will receive a packet of educational materials including a "Pandemic Flu Planning Checklist for Individuals and Families."

The local health department will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2-4. Please contact the department for cost of the vaccines.
