Flower show proves successful

The "Spirit of October" Flower Show, held Saturday, Oct. 6, in the Jenkins County Memorial Library, was a huge success. The show received great reviews from its more than 140 guests and three National Garden Club, Inc. accredited flower show judges.
Guests were treated to designs promoting the fall season. Virginia McBride's blue ribbon design, "Autumn Glory," was the overall winner of the Excellence in Design Award. Other winners in this class were: Beth Wiseman Kennedy, red; Marie Busby, yellow; and Bobbie Reid, honorable mention.
In the "Harvest Feast" class, winners were: Jean Skinner, blue; Martha Sue Wilson, red; Jane Johnson, yellow; and Diane Wade, honorable mention.
In the table designs category, titled "Trick or Treat," the winners were: Johnson, blue; Patricia Mann, red; Sandy Becton, yellow; and Marilyn Knight, honorable mention.
In the Special Exhibits section, the blue was awarded to Johnson for her educational display on "Litter - Everyone's Problem." The Ogeechee Riverkeepers won red. Both of these exhibits received an Award of Appreciation.

Top awards given for outstanding horticulture were the Awards of Merit, and the winners were: Edison and Sara Helen Harris, roses; Wilson, annuals; and Edna Pierce, perennials. Pierce also received the Arboreal Award for the most outstanding tree or shrub specimen.
Other blue ribbon winners in horticulture were: Wilma Gainey, Knight, Miriam Dickey, Lynda Daniel, McBride, Elizabeth Daniel, Skinner, Reid, Wade and Johnson.
Members of the Azalea Garden Club stated that they appreciate the public's help in making the "Spirit of October" an outstanding flower show. Members of Millen's Green Thumb and Camellia clubs and the Midville Garden Club also participated in the show. The show's organizers stated additionally that they hope this fall flower show will become an annual event, in conjunction with the Fair-on-the-Square.
